Data on Kubernetes Community Transitions to Community-Led Stewardship
By DoK Core Team
The Data on Kubernetes (DoK) Community is entering a new chapter. Since 2020 it has been a global hub for practitioners running databases, streaming, analytics and AI data on Kubernetes. Constantia LLC is transferring the community’s assets and stewardship to the community itself, with Sergey Pronin acting as steward during the transition.
We thank Constantia for building DoK into a community of more than 4,300 Slack members, with over 600 talks and videos, DoK Days at KubeCon and an annual research report. That foundation is why DoK is relaunching rather than starting from zero.
Sergey Pronin, founder of Solanica, and Kate Obiidykhata, Cloud Native GM at Percona, will lead the community as its interim core team. They are now recruiting contributors, founding sponsors and members to help shape what comes next.
This shift reflects DoK’s commitment to a governance model that mirrors the community it was built to serve: practitioner-led, transparent, and shaped by the people who run data on Kubernetes every day. To keep DoK vendor-neutral, the new model is built so that no single company can steer it:
- A five-seat steering committee: two end users, two sponsors and one maintainer, with one seat per company.
- A Sponsor Council that advises but does not vote.
- Rules money can’t buy around: no paid talk slots at DoK Day, no paid questions in the State of DoK report, and no paid Operator Scorecard results.
“DoK has always been at its best when the people on call for the database are the ones talking,” said Sergey Pronin, who is leading DoK through the transition. “Our job now is to give the community back to them, with governance that outlasts any one company, including ours.”
“Running data on Kubernetes is no longer an experiment. It’s day 2, every day,” said Kate Obiidykhata. “We want DoK to be the neutral place where teams learn how to do it well, and where every kind of contribution counts, not just code.”
What comes next
- Now: the DoK Contributor Program is open, along with the call for the first DoK Pilots, our community ambassadors, and Docks, our local chapters.
- 31 January 2027: founding sponsorship closes. Become a founding sponsor.
- KubeCon EU 2027: the public relaunch of DoK and the seating of the first steering committee.
